Murrini/millefiori is a technique and process that goes back to the glassmakers of ancient Egypt. Millefiori means "thousand flowers" in Italian.
Lampworking Murrini is built on the end of a stainless steel mandrel, layer by layer with different colors of glass, enamels and lots of clear glass. That big hunk of glass is superheated in the torch and once it's hot enough to be "plastic" it's pulled, stretched into long canes of glass. Strangely enough, the design holds constant through out the "pull" and once it's cool enough to handle, it's cut into tiny pieces to be used in beads or marbles. |
